A Japanese maple, *Acer palmatum ‘Shirazz’*, planted in a ceramic pot creates a strong focal point while framing the view from the sauna towards the dining area. Its changing foliage brings seasonal colour and interest to the garden throughout the year.

The natural warmth of the limestone paving provides a contrast to the surrounding planting and darker architectural elements.

At night, the character of the garden changes completely. Zoned, remote-controlled LED garden lighting highlights the planting, paving and architectural features, allowing different areas of the garden to be illuminated independently.

Creating the right balance between hard and soft landscaping is particularly important in a small garden, where every square meter needs to work effectively.

Living green walls allowed us to introduce a substantial amount of planting without sacrificing valuable floor space. The planting is supported by an automatic irrigation system and slow-release fertiliser, providing lush foliage, seasonal colour and year-round interest.

Three brick walls positioned throughout the garden help visually connect the different spaces. This is particularly noticeable when the garden is viewed from inside the house through the large sliding glass doors and side window.

The result is a garden that remains visually connected to the house throughout the year. Even on a cold winter evening, the garden becomes an extension of the interior living space.

A Sauna, copper shower and plunge pool to revive yourself after a hard days work !

Working in a tight space and trying to fit everything in can be a challenge. Minimal but big impact planting was needed to define spaces in the garden.

Tall *Fargesia* bamboo provides privacy and screening around the sauna. The lower sections of the canes were selectively pruned to expose the stems and allow underplanting beneath.

Keeping the lower level visually open maintains a sense of depth through the garden, helping the relatively compact space feel considerably larger.

The lower pruning helps to maintain a sense of space in the garden, making the space feel bigger than it actually is.

Yakisugi, the traditional Japanese technique of charring timber, is used extensively throughout the garden.

A two-metre-wide charred timber sliding wall separates the garden from the adjoining 45 sq. metre garden room, which also has an independent entrance behind the pergola.

Opening the sliding partition allows the garden room to become part of the outdoor living space. When closed, it creates a completely separate and private area.
