Rath Chairn Self Build
An open design brief here for a new build in the Gaeltacht area of Rathcairn, Co. Meath.
The house is south facing with a garage to the west creating a sheltered space between it and the house. The house is a T-shape design with split levels.
The entrance slopes down to the garage and house and the site continues to drop off to the large open field below.

5 Main areas were identified and the the natural slope in the land provided an exciting opportunity to create some truly individual spaces.
Area 1: The main entrance and driveway
Area 2: An upper level taking an advantage of the height difference from the roadway and the entrance level to the property
Area 3: The area to the right of the house connecting the front and rear of the property
Area 4: The space between the Garage and the House
Area 5: The space to the south of the property overlooking a large open field and extensive views right across the countryside
The Main entrance and driveway features dry stone walling which is inspired by the Stone walls of Connemara from where the Gaeltacht originated.
Irish families from Connemara settled in the area in the 1930's on Land acquired by The Land Commission.
Raised beds for vegetable planting and fruit trees are located on the upper level here.

The Lawn area to the left when entering links the front and back of the house which is terraced towards the rear in a circular pattern visible from the Pergola lounge area at the rear right of the garden.
Use of mature hedging creates a car parking area to the rear of the garage,
This planting also helps to create a courtyard effect between the garage and the house.
