Westmeath was created around the idea of a contemporary kitchen garden — a beautiful and practical outdoor space where growing, cooking, dining and relaxing all come together. Rather than removing the existing changes in ground level, the design uses them to give the garden structure and character. Multi-stem birch, Malus 'Prairie Fire' crab apple and a mature olive create an eclectic combination, with each tree bringing its own form, texture and seasonal character to the garden. Architectural planting adds drama and definition, while layered underplanting provides colour, texture and movement throughout the year.   Growing food is an integral part of the design rather than a separate functional area. A greenhouse provides the controlled environment needed to start vegetables from seed earlier in the season, extend harvesting well into autumn and protect more tender plants during the colder months. Fruit trees are trained along the garden walls, making efficient use of the available space while benefiting from the warmth retained by the walls. A Corten steel water feature introduces the gentle sound of moving water, while a large tree fern and surrounding ornamental grasses create a lush backdrop. A glass-covered aluminium structure along the side of the house provides a sheltered area for potting and caring for plants, together with practical storage for garden equipment and everyday essentials. By incorporating these functional requirements into the overall landscape design, they become part of the architecture of the garden rather than spaces that need to be hidden.
